It was a wonderful sunny day on Saturday if a bit blustery on the occasion of the Easington Miners Picnic
I was honoured to speak at the event alongside some excellent speakers including Steve Fergus from the Easington Banner Group, Easington Councillor Angela Surtees, Ann Scargill and performers including Easington Colliery Brass Band and the very entertaining quirky jazz band Meze Mondo. The children from Easington stole everyone’s hearts with their descriptions of what their heritage means to them and the importance of the beautiful nature reserve on the former pit site.
It was great to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones, visit the stalls and see the beautiful banners on display during the march to the pit cage. Thank you to all the Groups and organisations who displayed and paraded their banners including Easington NUM, Unite Community NE, Unison, GMB, RMT, NASUWT, Durham Women’s Banner Group, Easington Village Primary School and apologies if I have missed any out of a mention.
A big thank you to all the sponsors including the National Trust, Unite the Union, Unison and GMB local Councillors Angela Surtees and David Boyes, and to all the individuals and local organisations involved in organising the event or with displays or stalls the event especially Pop up Cimema, the Easington Communiity Café and “the Marras” Friends of the Durham Miners Gala.
