Durham Learning Alliance
Durham Learning Alliance

I was delighted to attend the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Durham Learning Alliance, a groundbreaking partnership aimed at expanding education opportunities and supporting economic growth in the North East.

This important collaboration brings together Durham University, New College Durham, East Durham College, Derwentside College, and Bishop Auckland College. The Alliance has already made significant progress, particularly in enhancing apprenticeship and employment opportunities, piloting T-level placements, and creating better pathways for post-16 education.

The formalisation of the Alliance through the MoU sets out an exciting three-year vision for addressing local, regional, and national education and skills needs. Each institution has committed to collaborating across seven key areas, from workforce development to expanding access to higher education, ensuring the partnership’s collective strength maximises opportunities for students and the region.

One of the most impressive outcomes of this partnership has been the success of T-level placements, with students from local colleges gaining valuable work experience at Durham University. These placements provide crucial mentorship, and plans are already in place to expand the programme, with a special focus on supporting young women in fields such as engineering and digital services.

The signing ceremony, held at Durham’s Collingwood College, was a great opportunity to witness the strength of this collaboration and its potential to create real change. It was a privilege to join local dignitaries, college leaders, and students in celebrating this milestone for education in our region.

I look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have on local communities, students, and the wider economy.
