The relocation of homeless families from London to regions hundreds of miles away is not only a housing crisis, but crisis of fairness, compassion and accountability. Vulnerable families face an impossible choice: remain homeless in London or uproot their lives.

The consequences of these forced relocations are severe. Families are uprooted, children removed from schools, and essential support networks severed.

The Supreme Court is clear that local authorities must provide suitable accommodation within their area wherever practicable, or otherwise as close as possible to the original area. Yet, councils continue to break the law, relocating families over 250 miles away without proper consultation or notification to the receiving authorities, as they are required to do.

This practice is both inhumane and illegal. Families deserve to trust their local councils for support during times of crisis, not to face threats, coercion, and intimidation.

We must see the end to these unlawful practices, and ensure fairness and dignity for all families.

I raised these issues and concerns with the Minister in an adjournment debate on Monday 25 November, after recent casework, parliamentary questions, and press reports.
