Grahame Morris MP has made representations to Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, calling on the government to cancel the debt of student nurses working to tackle the outbreak of Covid-19 across the UK.

The letter states that, as of 9 April, 5,553 students from 35 universities had responded to a call from the government to sign up for a paid placement. In doing so, they rearranged their studies to join the NHS frontline early.

The Covid-19 outbreak has served to emphasise the vital work that our healthcare workers carry out, and thousands of people continue to show their gratitude in the weekly clap for carers. The letter contends that cancelling student debt would be ‘an important signal to those starting their careers during this crisis that they are valued, not just by the public and their patients, but by their government as well.’

Grahame Morris MP said, “In signing this letter, I join the call for the government to cancel student debt for nurses. In doing so, the government would be expressing its gratitude for the dedication that thousands of nurses have shown in joining the NHS frontline response, and for the vital work they carry out to care for all of us.”
