At 75, the NHS stands as a remarkable testament to the power of collective action, embodying the values of equality, compassion, and fairness. It is a source of pride and serves as a living embodiment of socialist principles, where access to healthcare is determined solely by need, rather than wealth or status.

Undoubtedly, the NHS remains Labour’s greatest achievement. Nye Bevan, the visionary founder of the NHS, aptly described it as “the most civilised step any country had ever taken.” Such recognition is well-deserved, as the NHS exemplifies the tremendous impact that politics can have on our society and demonstrates our nation’s unwavering resilience. Born in the aftermath of the Second World War, it emerged as a promise of a better future, one that surpassed the hardships of the past.

Despite the challenges it has faced, from chronic underinvestment to attempts at privatisation and the burdens of austerity, the NHS has endured. It weathered the storm, even as it found itself ill-prepared on the eve of the COVID-19 crisis after a decade of political mismanagement. Yet, through the exceptional hard work, unwavering dedication, and astounding bravery of its healthcare professionals, the NHS once again protected, cared and dutifully served our nation.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I applauded the tireless efforts of the brave men and women within the NHS. However, for such applause to hold genuine meaning, it must be accompanied by meaningful action to support those who find themselves compelled to take industrial action due to the continued neglect inflicted upon them by the Conservative Party.

This 75th anniversary serves as a timely reminder that we must continuously campaign and fight to safeguard the principles and achievements we hold dear. Today, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to meet with NHS staff and express to them that the value and respect I hold for their incredible work transcends mere rhetoric and empty gestures. My utmost show of respect is a resolute promise to stand and support them in parliament and on the picket line until they are truly valued and appreciated by the government.
