Community to Remember Veterans of the ‘Forgotten War’: Honoring the Courage and Sacrifice on the 70th Anniversary of the Korean Armistice

Seaham will come together on Thursday, 27th July at 6 pm to pay tribute to the brave veterans of the Korean War, 70 years after the signing of the Korean Armistice. A Memorial Service will be held at Terrace Green, Seaham, remembering the sacrifices made by the valiant men and women who served in the “Forgotten War.”
The Korean War, though often overshadowed by larger conflicts, played a pivotal role in shaping the course of world history during the Cold War era. The highlight of the event will be the presence of distinguished Korean War veterans, Bob and Fen Lamb, twin brothers who served in the Navy, and Herbie Chapman, a soldier during the conflict.
During the ceremony, attendees will commemorate the more than 100,000 British service personnel who were involved in the conflict. Over 1,000 British soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice, while thousands more suffered injuries or became prisoners of war.
The Korean War resulted in over 100,000 casualties among the United Nations forces, leaving a significant impact on both North and South Korea. Even after seven decades, the war remains unresolved, with tensions still running high.
In remembrance of the fallen heroes and as a tribute to their legacy, a memorial was unveiled in London in 2014, serving as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during this often-forgotten war.
The service will be led by local Seaham Councillor and Veteran David McKenna, with speeches and contributions from Grahame Morris, MP for Easington, Gary Lamb speaking on behalf of his father and uncle, and Joe Walker conducting the act of remembrance. The service will conclude with the lowering of the Union flag, accompanied by the last post, reveille, and sunset played on the bugle by Nikki Temple-Hall from Trimdon Brass Band.
Easington MP Grahame Morris said: “I am honored to be invited to speak. The Korean War is known as the ‘forgotten war,’ but as a community, we are committed to preserving the stories of these brave veterans. Over 1000 British soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. Each one with dreams, aspirations, and loved ones waiting for their safe return. We will never forget the price they paid for peace and stability in a region far from home.”

Councillor David McKenna, a former Colour Sergeant with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, said: “The Korean War is often overshadowed by the Second World War and Vietnam, but thousands of soldiers, including national service personnel, returned to the frontline just five years after victory in Europe. A service and act of remembrance are our commitment to ensuring the service and sacrifice for freedom, peace, and democracy will never be forgotten.”
