Easington MP Grahame Morris highlighted the outrageous price disparities on local forecourts, as Asda becomes the first supermarket to publish local fuel prices online.

The UK’s third largest supermarket became the first to publish real time fuel prices data through their online store locator. The new data has exposed a significant price disparity with motorist in Peterlee paying 11p and 12p more per litre for unleaded and diesel compared to a neighbouring ASDA forecourt in Bishop Auckland.

“Enough is enough” declared Grahame Morris “Motorists in East Durham ‘Get the Asda Price Feeling’ every time they visit, paying significantly higher prices than in neighbouring stores. We need fair fuel pricing.

All fuel retailers should be open and honest about their pricing, and take steps to address gross price differentials. The unfair pricing practices of fuel retailers have been exposed by the Competition and Markets Authority. Asda have increased their fuel margin target, which is three time higher today than in 2019 and engaged in ‘feathering’ a process whereby prices are lowered more slowly than falls in wholesale costs.

Where the market fails to function, the Government must act. ASDA are the first to publish their data, with more retailers to follow shortly.

If they want to trade on the tagline ‘Get the Asda Price Feeling’, they must end profiteering and price gouging. Its time they address local price disparities and start delivering better value for people living in East Durham.”
