Durham County Council have provided me an update on the modernisation of facilities at Peterlee Leisure Centre.

The reopening of the swimming pool has been delayed until Spring 2024. While initial plans focused on improving the pool plant room’s efficiency and sustainability, an inspection of the pool’s pipework showed significant deterioration. The decision was made to replace the pipework entirely to ensure the long-term reliability and safety of these swimming facilities.

While I am immensely disappointed at the delays, leaving East Durham without any swimming facilities, this additional work will prevent future disruption and safeguard the long-term viability of the pool.

Meanwhile, other areas of the centre have seen improvements, and are already open for use. The gym now features new Technogym equipment and technology, providing a contemporary workout space. Three new fitness studios, including dedicated cycling and mind-body spaces, are under construction and due to open this Autumn.

A new soft play area and bowling alley, welcome additions for the town, are in place with the final finishing touches being made before the Autumn reopening.

A further update from Durham County Council is due by mid-September to inform of the opening arrangements for the studios, bowling alley and soft play areas.

A further update relating to the pool should be forthcoming once additional investigations and works programme has been finalised.
