The Conservative/Lib Dem and Independent ruling Coalition at Durham County Council has today decided to disregard the objections of 2648 residents and businesses to APPROVE the introduction of car parking charges in Seaham.

This will mean higher costs for people visiting and working in Seaham. This decision follows the announcement by the same Department for Regeneration, Economy & Growth, that new leisure facilities will not go ahead in Seaham.

Durham County Council is actively undermining business, regeneration, and growth in East Durham. The only thing those responsible for economic growth can show is higher costs and fewer facilities.

The Conservative/Lib Dems and Independents promised to listen to our communities, instead, they have ignored the overwhelming view of businesses, residents, and visitors by sanctioning these charges.

Please can I thank Labour Cllrs David McKenna and Kevin Shaw, Seaham Town Council represented by Eddie Bell, and the residents who made a compelling case against these charges. It was clear during the meeting that this decision was pre-determined, and that Durham County Council had no intention of listening to the thousands who objected to these damaging proposals.
