Last week, new data from the Office for National Statistics revealed a heartbreaking reality: in 2023, 5,448 lives were lost to drug poisoning in England and Wales, with the most deprived areas, including the North East, bearing the greatest impact. Each loss represents not just a statistic but a life with family, friends, and a community left grieving.
As Chair of the Drugs, Alcohol, and Justice APPG, I’ve tabled an Early Day Motion to highlight this pressing public health crisis. In parliament on Thursday, I called on- the government to work with APPG officers and treatment providers to turn the tide on this issue.

We need focused debate and action on this issue to support those affected and prevent future loss. I am hopeful that with this government’s vision to rebuild our NHS and commitment to cross-departmental working, we can address this crisis head-on and build safer, healthier communities for all.
