Grahame Morris MP Working for Easington
Easington MP Grahame Morris has welcomed a statement confirming that the Government is now examining existing legislation surrounding the use and regulation of fireworks.
In a letter to Mr Morris, Justine Madders MP, Minister for Employment Rights, Competition and Markets, confirmed the Government will consult with businesses, consumer groups and charities after firework season, as he examines existing legislation to decision if policy changes are required.
Responding to a letter Grahame Morris MP said:
“After years of obstruction from the previous government, I am pleased to see that Ministers are finally taking this matter seriously. The commitment to review current laws is a critical first step in addressing the long-standing concerns of communities about issues relating to the use, and often, misuse of fireworks.
Fireworks are enjoyed by many, but their misuse and excessive noise can cause significant distress to vulnerable individuals, pets, and wildlife. I welcome the Minister’s recognition of these issues.
The Minister’s proactive approach is a refreshing change and a necessary step to ensure that fireworks are used safely, responsibly, and considerately, balancing enjoyment with the need to protect public safety and wellbeing.”
The Minister has committed to examining the details of existing firework legislation and considering policy changes where needed. Public safety, the impact on people, animals, and property will be central to any future decisions, according to the Minster.
Grahame Morris MP added: “I look forward to engaging with the Government as part of this process and will continue to advocate for measures that reduce the risks and disturbances caused by fireworks while preserving their safe and considerate use.”
